So what kind of education is required to become a podiatrist?  It involves 4 years of podiatry school after college.  I was a biology premed student in college.  I then attended the New York College of Podiatric Medicine.  The first two years consisted of basic science courses and the last two years were more specialized and clinical training.  I graduated in 1989 and at that time the residency programs were either one or two years.  Today, podiatrists have 3 years of residency.  A doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) is truly an expert in the foot and ankle.  The extensive training prepares one to treat a large array of foot conditions.   Podiatrists are truly saving limbs with fine diabetic foot care and improving the quality of life of so many Americans.
