The weather is hot and humid.  Our feet are sweating more than usual.  Our feet are often covered with shoes creating a dark, moist environment.   In other words,  conditons are ripe for fungus to thrive.   Athlete' s Foot is a fungal infection of the skin.  It is extremely common because our feet are naturally meant to get more air.  Unfortunately, modern conditions make this difficult.  The medical term for Athlete's Foot is tinea pedis.   Tinea pedis most often presents as red, scaling skin.  It can sometimes present as blisters.   The skin will itch and feel uncomfortabe.  The symptoms will most commonly manifest on the bottom of the feet and between the toes.   The skin between the toes will usually appear white and macerated.  The good news is that we have effective topical medicines to clear the fungus infection.  Some are over the counter and others by prescription.  Drying the feet well and letting your feet air out are helpful.  Powders can be used to absorb moisture.  Wearing shoes that "breath" well also is beneficial.  It will often take a few weeks to clear up totally.  In severe cases, an oral anitfungal can be utilized.  

When the temperature climbs to near 90 degrees and the humidity is high, it is important to take logical steps to prevent heat related health issues.  Dehydration is a major risk.   Many people are walking around everyday in a mildly dehydrated state.  The old adage of drinking 8 cups of water may be more than some need, but is a good rule of thumb.  In the hot weather we lose water to perspiration as the body attempts to cool down.  It is important to increase liquid intake.  This does not include high caffeine or alcohol drinks.  Avoid strenuous exercise and seek shade or airconditioning when possible.  Be aware of changes in your mental state such as dizziness or fatigue.  Severe dehydration and heat stroke are life threatening conditons.  Keep an eye out for others who may be overheating.  As I podiatrist, my foot advice is to wear shoes that breath well or sandals.  Good socks are also helpful while in closed shoes.  Let your feet "air out"  when possible.  Good luck and hopefully the weather will improve next week.

Patients visiting us at East Avenue Podiatry in Norwalk, CT are pleasantly surprised by the short waiting time.  I have always prided myself on running on time.  This is accomplished by scheduling patients at reasonable intervals and dedicating my time in the office to patient care.  I believe the working hours are just that, time to work.  It is common courtesy to respect the time of others.  My patients know that the rare times I am running behind, there is a good reason.   Patient care is number one and sometimes requires an extended stay.  Doctors today need to be available to answer calls from pharmacies, other doctors and patients in an emergency.  I also do very little advertising as my goal is to be steady, but not to overbook.  Most times patients can schedule an appointment within a few days of their call.  When your foot hurt, you need quick relief.   Call 203-853-6570.

On behalf of our entire staff at East Avenue Podiatry, I would like to wish all those dads out there a very happy Father's Day.  It is a day that I hope saw children expressing appreciation for all dad does.  I hope this is but one of many special days over the next year.   Happy holiday from Dr. Lonnie Resnick.

In this great country of ours, there is much to enjoy.  It is a land of great diversity.  People from all over the world have brought their cultures here including many foods.  Americans tend to overindulge and it becomes essential to have enough exercise to stay healthy and fit.  In my office, I see many patients who want to lose weight, but their feet are preventing them from getting the necessary exercise.  Many foot conditions result from overusing them in unnatural conditions.   After all, we are not meant to be walking on hard surfaces.  Good, supportive shoes and in some cases custom or over the counter inserts are necessary to counter these conditions.  I recognize the importance of exercise and do not want to tell a patient to totally stop.   However, I will often advise temporarily decreasing the intensity of the activity.   I also suggest alternating the type of exercise from day to day.  It is ideal to perform exercises such as swimming or biking that  put less stress on the feet.  So please practice moderation in your diet and begin an exercise program that will allow your feet to hold up over time.
